There are foods that cannot be frozen usually because they get mushy and mealy, or they can turn black. For instance, most produce with high water content should not be frozen, as well as any food that has been fried, mostly because it loses its crispness and becomes mushy. Here is a list of the foods that should NOT be frozen.
- Raw vegetables with a high-water content
- Fried foods
- Custards or cream filled pastry
- Icing, soft frostings
- Sour cream or mayo (unless it has been mixed into a recipe)
- Soft cheeses (feta, cottage, ricotta)
- Raw or boiled potatoes (they will become mealy, watery and then turn black)
- Hard-boiled eggs or cooked egg whites
Here is a list of foods that CAN be frozen.
- Meat (raw or cooked)
- Herbs
- Breads
- Uncooked pizza dough
- Pizza
- Bananas that have been peeled
- Grated cheeses
- Butter
- Cookies
- Cooked Rice
- Flour
- Nuts
- Cooked pasta
Foods that are frozen should be eaten within three months of freezing, but mostly for the quality of the food rather than the safety. Foods that have been previously thawed should never be refrozen and remember to never put glass directly from the oven into the freezer, as it may shatter.
