For the past few years, I have been on a quest to eat less processed and more whole foods. One of the items that I try to keep from purchasing are hamburger buns. This recipe is a perfect accompaniment to a hamburger, and they are a great option for sandwiches as well. There is something gratifying about taking a few simple ingredients and turning them into something delicious, without all the additives and preservatives that are found in store bought buns. Give these a try and you will be pleasantly surprised at how delish they are with a burger!
This is really easy. You add all the ingredients into the mixing bowl all at once, blend everything together until a dough form, let that rise for an hour, form 6-8 buns, let them rise for 30 minutes and bake them off. Easy peasy.
The original recipe calls for regular sugar, but I opted for my homemade brown sugar. It added a lovely sweetness to the finish product. I also decided to use two different flours. I chose Kamut and White Whole Wheat and these resulted in a great texture. I used the buns to make a chicken burger, topped with homegrown tomatoes and quick pickled red onion (a Reel on how to make them is on my Instagram). They were SO GOOD!
Hamburger Buns
Ingredients
- 1 C Water
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 egg
- 3 1/4 C all-purpose flour
- 3/4 C sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp instant yeast
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients and mix and knead them together, by hand or mixer, until you have a soft, sooth dough. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into 8 pieces and shape each piece into a flattened ball. Place the buns on greased baking sheets, cover, and let rise 30 – 40 minutes, until they are puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Bake the buns for 12-15 min, until they are golden brown. Remove them from the oven and cool them on a rack. Split and use them for burgers or sandwiches.
